All housing projects developed by the Society are decent, secure and supportively managed housing where the residents can stay as long as they wish. Families may have to move from one unit to another as their family size changes, but Society policy is to place them in appropriate housing that we own. In short, it is housing they can call home. Stable housing helps to stabilize other aspects of peoples' lives and health and, in turn, the life and health of the community in which they live.

Once their basic housing needs are met, many of our tenants actively contribute to the community.  We have seen great success stories.   We encourage people living in our housing to be active in the neighbouring communities and involved in community issues that affect them. Tenant meetings are held when there are neighbourhood decisions requiring their input.

Many of our tenants learn and apply new skills, and volunteer with other community organizations such as local health councils, emergency shelters, education centers, and other inner city services. They also contribute to Society activities such as special events, fundraisers, and office support. Some of our tenants serve as members of the board.

In 1996, EICHS tenants formed the Residents Association to build community between tenants, staff, the board, and other community members. Some of its main activities are planning and executing social and educational events for EICHS tenants and networking with other neighbours in the community.

Since 1983 we have developed over 12 housing projects. Our present projects house over 300 people, including families and singles. In the future, EICHS will continue to develop and manage the affordable housing that is so desperately needed.
