who can live at EICHS?

Anyone of low income who has lived in the inner city or has close connections, such as children at school here, and can agree to the rental rules, can live in Society housing.  People with no connection to the inner city may live in a Society housing unit only if no local person is on the waiting list for that unit. Priority is given to local people so they can remain close to their established community connections, and support services. This helps stabilize individual lives and the community benefits from a stable population.

EICHS does not provide emergency housing. We have a waiting list for both single and family dwellings. In order to become a tenant, a person must come to the office and fill in an application. This will put that person's name on the waiting list. The Society does not accept applications when people are drunk, and does not accept people with recent incidents of violence against people or property.  We check two references for each applicant.  As we do not have staffed housing, we cannot house people who must have 24 hour care. EICHS is not special needs housing. Applicants must be able to live independently or have support services arranged to the satisfaction of the Society. Single tenants are over 18 years of age. A number of tenants are seniors.

The main thing the tenants have in common is very low income. No other assumption should be made about any one tenant. However, because physical and mental illnesses and disabilities are barriers to employment, these problems are found more often among people with low income. Many of our tenants have used mental health services.
